Enriching the whole child

Zoe Learning House provides education that is hands-on, creative, and inspiring while building a solid academic foundation.

We like to call our approach “Creative Charlotte Mason,” and it is inspired by both Charlotte Mason and Reggio Emilia approaches. We believe these two approaches together honor the personhood and brilliance of each child, while providing an enriching and inspiring education. We do not consider ourselves purists to a method over the importance of responsive practices, understanding what is best for the individual child we are working with. However, these time-tested approaches are devoted to honoring children, childhood, and connection with family and community. At Zoe Learning House, we also believe our “Creative Charlotte Mason” approach honors the way that God has designed children to grow and learn.

Honoring the personhood and brilliance of every child

Hands-on

Embracing how children make meaning of the world

Research supports that children build greater understanding when they learn through hands-on, real-world experiences.

Both our phonics and our math curricula follow this progression:

(1) from tactile, exploratory, and playful

(2) to visual pictures and drawings

(3) finally to abstract concepts of text, numbers, and ideas

We also incorporate hands-on, experiential learning at Zoe Learning House through:

  • Project Time: students work on science and social studies projects, solve puzzles, and build with a variety of materials

  • Nature study and child-friendly cooking activities

  • Family field trips that integrate with topics being studied

Learning comes alive and becomes more fulfilling through Arts Integration within the core curriculum.

Our creative approach at Zoe Learning House includes:

  • Visual Art, Music and Movement, and Readers Theater

  • Creative Spotlights each month highlighting a new Artist, Composer, and Author, along with invitations to make our own creations inspired by their work

  • Students learn the art of Narration, a creative method of retelling in their own words a story verbally, through pictures, or in journal writing.

  • SeeSaw is a platform we use at Zoe Learning House as a portfolio to document student work and make that visible to families.

  • Showcases for families throughout year of creative student work and performances

Creative

Giving children many ways to make their thinking visible

Zoe Learning House seeks to inspire children through meaningful connections, nurturing character, and a living curriculum.

Making Connections - with self, with others, with the world

  • Self and Others: We support social-emotional growth through responsive practices that coach children on calming down when upset, problem solving, and making repairs when someone else has been hurt.

  • Others: Collaborative projects and discussions, Morning Meeting, clubs and interest-led opportunities

  • World: Understanding the human story through social studies, service projects, appreciation of nature, art, and music

Nurturing Character - Through engaging Bible readings and discussion, we use a framework to discuss character: I Am, I Can, I Ought, I Will

  • I Am - children understand they are loved and they have a purpose

  • I Can - they can do hard things and they are capable

  • I Ought - our shared goals for integrity, empathy, and kindness

  • I Will - our daily commitment to focus on

Inspiring

Providing a feast of ideas and experiences

A Living Curriculum - Giving children enriching experiences and ideas through a wide exposure to literature, read-alouds, extended time outside and nature study, and a broad curriculum (geography, poetry, history told through living books)
